The Story

The Mama Africa Collection by Nzinga Blake

This collection is inspired by a family heirloom that was passed down from Nzinga Blake's maternal grandmother, Edith Emmekunle Nylander, who was from Freetown, Sierra Leone, and of Yoruba descent from Nigeria.  Nzinga and her mother, Hortensia Blake, reimagined this beautiful family heirloom to include a full collection of unisex legacy pieces that can be shared with the entire family and passed down for generations.

As a child, Nzinga remembered that most children of African descent living in western countries never had the opportunity to celebrate their heritage and culture because it was so often tarnished by negative representations in the media.  Over the past few years, however, we have seen a beautiful transformation of how the African Diaspora has embraced its pride in Africa and being of African descent.

With this unique jewelry collection you can now wear your pride and celebrate the beauty of the entire African continent, regardless of where you come from. The rivers in the collection, (the Nile, Congo, Niger, Orange, and Limpopo) represent the waterways and entries from the north, south, east, and west into beautiful Mama Africa.
